SteadyHands Gloves are specifically designed to assist riders striving for better position, more independent hands and a better contact. Almost all riders can benefit from making (even very subtle) improvements to their hand position and contact.
Recommended Usage

SteadyHands can be used as little or as often as desired, but we recommend consistent use for at least 15 minutes a ride over one month to see a change in hand habits (it takes about that much time for new neural pathways to change previous habits).

The wonderful thing about horse riding is that learning never stops, and SteadyHands will accompany you through your entire riding journey, as you continue to refine and develop your contact and connection.

Fabric and Care

The gloves are made of a soft yet durable engineered leather, designed for the perfect balance between grip, feel and wear resistance.

They can be washed in the washing machine at 30°C (but we do not recommend tumble drying them). Simply wipe over the strap.

The gloves are touchscreen compatible.

Contact problems?

Fiddling with the reins
The gloves are not so restrictive that they completely prevent the rider from being able to move their hands and fiddle, but they bring a huge amount of awareness to hand movements. Riders use that real-time feedback to quiet their hands - they really work!
“Pram” or downward facing hands
By using the elasticised strap as a gentle resistance band, riders activate the muscle chain that helps to keep thumbs facing the sky and palms facing each other. Regular, focused use of the gloves over at least a month is required to fix this habit.
Hands too wide
The strap bridging the gloves helps regulate the width of the rider’s hands. The width can be adjusted depending on the rider’s ability and comfort, and riders can gradually bring their hands to the “ideal” bit-width apart.
Hands too low
Riders will be able to use the strap as a gentle assistance to keep elbows bent, which naturally brings hands higher and ensures a straight bit-hand-elbow line for optimal contact and soft, following connection.
Overreliance on reins
The gentle guidance from the strap helps riders to minimise hand movements, whether due to wanting to fix issues from the hands (instead of using legs and seat), or due to imbalance. Riders report having more awareness of how much they are inadvertently using their reins, and being reminded to use their seat and legs instead.
Hands moving around
The SteadyHands gloves strap is positioned across the back of the hands in a way that it brings an incredible amount of proprioception (spatial awareness) to the rider’s hands. This assists riders to keep their hands steady, along with the benefits to hand position that come from wearing the gloves regularly.
Hands not working as a pair
With the strap bridging the hands safely, riders gain noticeably increased cross-hand awareness and are able to have the hands working as a pair. This does not mean the hands have to each do the exact same thing, but that they “talk to each other” through the rider’s brain, so the rider is aware of what each hand is doing.
RECOMMENDED USAGE
For beginner riders

SteadyHands gloves guide the hands in the correct position from the beginning, while encouraging a more independent seat. Stop bad habits from developing and needing to be fixed later. The safety release makes them completely safe, even for beginner and junior riders.

For intermediate riders

This is the time when riders are learning to bring their horse "on the bit", and can be a very challenging learning phase. SteadyHands helps enormously at this time, as it gives riders the chance to experience what a following, consistent and forward-feeling contact can feel like - which is a prerequisite for correctly bringing the horse on the bit.

For advanced riders

SteadyHands can be used to make subtle changes in the engagement of forearm and upperarm muscles, as well as wrist position, in order to refine the rein contact to its optimum. At the highest levels, every single detail matters, and those small changes can make huge improvements to performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

It seems too simple to work?

Sometimes, the simplest solutions are the most effective ones. Coaches have been bridging riders’ reins since the beginning of riding instruction. Other coaches used stirrup leathers, or baling twine, to try to get the same effect (!).

However, we have designed a product that is completely safe, and compared to simply bridging the reins, has a gentle, elastic resistance-band effect to encourage the rider to engage the correct muscle chains through the arms and upper body, providing a biomechanical solution to many common hand problems.

How do I get the right size?

See our size chart here with exact measurements - we recommend you size up if you are in between sizes. We will happily exchange your gloves to ensure you have got a comfortable fit.

Why are they more expensive than ordinary gloves?

They are not ordinary gloves - they are constructed using panels of engineered leather, velcro and mesh for the optimum fit and performance. The strap itself is specifically designed and made for purpose. We also offer a 12-month warranty (like all our products) to ensure you can get the most out of your investment.

For the price of just one or two riding lessons, these gloves make a dramatic difference to most riders’ hand position and contact, and deliver continued lightbulb moments over many years.

What if my horse spooks while I’m wearing the gloves?

The strap is equipped with a specially-designed safety release clip, which holds fast under steady pressure but unclips immediately with any sudden or sharp movement (it doesn’t require a lot of force to come undone, just a quick movement).

If your horse spooks and you lose your balance as a result, the gloves will come apart in less than a second, and you can ride through as usual.

We recommend testing the safety clip regularly by pulling your hands apart in a quick motion.

Will I become reliant on them?

The gloves are not designed as a band-aid or quick fix. They help riders to rewire neural pathways over time, so new habits can form. Use them consciously for real-time feedback, and spend the last 10-15 minutes of the ride without them to see how well you can maintain your new habits without their help.

Will they feel too restrictive?

To a certain extent, the gloves are somewhat restrictive, which is how they can provide so much feedback to riders. However, the elastic strap gives a soft, gentle feel on the reins, and the strap can be adjusted to the width that is best suited to the rider’s comfort and ability. It’s important to remember that building new habits usually involves a period of discomfort as our brain adjusts to a “new normal”.

What riding level are they designed for?

The gloves are safe enough to be used by beginners and junior riders, and provide subtle enough feedback that even Olympic-level riders use them to refine their contact. Every rider in between will also benefit from the proprioceptive feedback and biomechanical assistance which the gloves provide.
